Curriculum Summary

PHD in public health curriculum summary

The PHD in Public Health degree provides students a clear understanding of the roles of the core disciplines in public health. It is a trimester-based program including 5 majors in public health i.e. (1) Health Policy and Management, (2) Community and Reproductive Health, (3) Urban and Global Health, (4) Environmental and Occupational Health, and (5) Health Behaviors. The Doctoral Program is a research-based degree leading to a dissertation. The doctoral dissertation is expected to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and must meet the most rigorous academic standards in public health. The doctoral program is available to students in two schemes of study. Students seeking the PHD in Public Health degree must complete 48 or 72 credits of academic work with an average grade of "GPA 3.00" or better based on study scheme.

 

The study plan provides to 2 types of Scheme:

(1) Non coursework PHD in Public Health (Scheme 1.1 and 1.2) and

(2) Coursework PHD in Public Health (Scheme 2.1 and 2.2)

 

Non coursework PHD in Public Health (Scheme 1):
“Scheme 1” is a research-based program leading to a dissertation. This type of scheme consists of two formats:

(a) “Scheme 1.1”: Candidates who have a master’s degree in public health or related field shall produce a dissertation worth not less than 48 credits.
(b) “Scheme 1.2”: Candidates who have a bachelor’s degree in public health with Honours shall produce a dissertation worth not less than 72 credits.

 

Scheme 1.1 Round (Open Semester August & December)
 

Coursework PHD in Public Health (Scheme 2):
“Scheme 2” is a research-based program, combining coursework with research leading to a dissertation. This type of scheme consists of two formats:

(a) “Scheme 2.1”: Candidates with a master’s degree in public health or related field shall take courses of at least 12 credits in total and produce a dissertation worth not less than 36 credits.
(b) “Scheme 2.2”: Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in public health or related field shall take courses of at least 24 credits in total and produce a dissertation worth not less than 48 credits.

 

Non coursework PHD in Public Health (Scheme 1) Scheme 1.1 and 1.2: students in must register Seminar in Health Research with non-credit and complete Dissertation 48 credits (scheme 1.1) and 72 credits (scheme 1.1), respectively.

 

Course work PHD in Public Health (Scheme 2) This coursework is distributed as follows:

  • Core areas of public health:

Students in scheme 2.1 must take two courses (6 credits): Research Methodology in Public Health and Statistics in Public Health Research. And the scheme 2.2 students must take the following four courses (12 Credits): Health Problems, Determinants, and Trends, Health Systems Development, Research Methodology in Public Health, and Statistics in Public Health Research.

 

  • Compulsory courses required by the major:

Students in scheme 2.1 must take 1 course (3 credits). To determine which courses are required, these courses are distributed by majors as follows:

-  Health Policy and Management: Policy and Strategic Planning

-  Community and Reproductive Health: Community Assessment

-  Urban and Global Health: Introduction to Urban and Global Health

-  Environmental and Occupational Health: Introduction to Environmental Health

-  Health Behaviors: Health Behavior

Students in scheme 2.2 must take 2 courses (6 credits). These courses are distributed by majors as follows:

-  Health Policy and Management: Policy and Strategic Planning and Implementation and Management

-  Community and Reproductive Health: Reproductive Health and Community Assessment

-  Urban and Global Health: Introduction to Urban and Global Health and Globalization and Contemporary Public Health

-  Environmental and Occupational Health: Introduction to Environmental Health and Environmental and Health Risk Assessment

-  Health Behaviors: Health Behavior and Social and Cultural Determinants of Health 

 

  • Elective courses: 

Students in scheme 2.1 must enroll 3 credits and scheme 2.2 must enroll 6 credits. Please refer to advisor and/or program for specific recommended electives such as Directed Studies, Field Study, Advanced Skills in Science and Research etc.

 

  • Dissertation:

Students in scheme 2.1 must enroll 36 credits and scheme 2.2 must enroll 48 credits throughout your study plan.

 

  • Qualifying Examination:

Both non coursework student (Scheme 1) and coursework student (Scheme 2) require Qualifying Exam (non credit) before proposal defense

Curriculum for the doctor of philosophy in public health degree

Non coursework (Scheme 1) and Coursework (Scheme 2) seeking the PhD in Public Health degree of any majors must complete 36 credits of academic course work with an average grade of “GPA 3.00” or better. Courses are three credit hours unless otherwise noted.
