The demand of herbal medicines is increasing due to their biological activities and safety margin. It is necessary to characterize the herbal medicines to ensure their safety, efficacy and quality. Molecular techniques have been developed as useful tools for medicinal plants research such as DNA fingerprinting genotypes, phylogenetic analysis, taxonomy, detection of adulterant. DNA-based molecular markers such as PCR-RFLP, RAPD, AFLP, ISSR, microsatellite DNA, SNPs and DNA barcoding have a great utility in medicinal plant research and widely used for characterization of medicinally important plant species.
